Digital Heritage Preservation in Museums: Opportunities, Challenges, and Future Directions

Abstract

In today's digital environment, safeguarding cultural heritage has become a major concern for museums. Advances in digitisation enable museums to document, preserve, interpret, and disseminate cultural materials through digital archives, three-dimensional modelling, virtual exhibitions, and cloud-based storage. This study reviews the literature on digital heritage preservation and examines the role of digital technologies in protecting cultural resources for future generations. The review highlights benefits including improved accessibility, systematic documentation, disaster preparedness, and international knowledge sharing, while also examining challenges related to sustainability, cybersecurity, copyright, technological obsolescence, funding, and professional expertise. Overall, the literature indicates that digital preservation is now an important component of museum management and heritage conservation. Its long-term effectiveness depends on sustained technical investment, institutional commitment, appropriate governance, and collaboration among relevant stakeholders.
