Abstract

Scholars are starting to examine men and masculinity from a racial dynamic perspective. The disciplines of masculinity and ethnicity are intrinsically linked, according to a number of scholars, including Mrinalini Sinha, Robyn Wiegman, Michael Awkward, and Alfredo Mirandé. Critical ethnic studies, a field that originated in the US in the 1970s and showed how important race is to our social and political lives, has also had an impact on the concept of masculinities. Because of the influence of feminism, homosexual studies, and ethnic studies, the field of masculinity studies has flourished in the United States for more than thirty years. However, compared to more established academic fields like women's studies, the study of masculinity is still in its early life (Brod). The field of masculinity studies did not really take off until the 1990s, despite the fact that some of the most progressive American universities, like Berkeley, had begun to offer courses on masculinities as early as the 1970s. These analyses have given rise to a critical theory (Judith Newton) that actively promotes women's rights and gender parity in the workplace.
